Easy Summer Crafts for Seniors

Summer Sun Catchers

There’s something undeniably special about the South Carolina summer sun – and what better way to capture those late-season rays than with a homemade sun catcher you can hang in your window? This grandkid-friendly craft takes less than 15 minutes. First, you’ll sketch out a drawing or complete a coloring page; then, you’ll cover the coloring page with a light layer of olive oil for a translucent look. The oil allows sunlight to shine through your design, creating a pretty little summer craft you can enjoy well into the fall.

Ice Cream Cone Keychain

Add a little sweetness to your purse, suitcase, or car keys with an easy felt keychain shaped like an ice cream cone. This craft may look impressive, but all you really need are some vibrant balls of felt, a metal key ring, and hot glue. If you don’t have much use for a keychain, you can also glue the felt ice cream cone shape to a magnet (to use on your refrigerator) or onto a skewer (to use as a cake decoration).

Summery Crochet Patterns

You might think that winter is the best time to knit or crochet. It’s true: Bulky sweater or afghan crochet patterns can be fun projects for the colder months. However, late summer is also a great time to work on easy, lacy crochet patterns that have a beachy feel. You can experiment with bright, vibrant yarn colors for things like summer shawls and hats. If you’re not sure where to start, you can find lots of free patterns online.

Popsicle Stick Planters or Baskets

If you love spending time in the garden, consider bringing a little greenery indoors with an easy popsicle stick planter. Seniors with green thumbs can create this pint-sized basket by binding craft sticks with color-coordinated yarn. This produces a multi-purpose basket that can be used to hold a plant, pens, jewelry, or small trinkets.

Sweet-Smelling Soap

We’re proud to be one of South Carolina’s premier senior living facilities – and, as any South Carolinian knows, we eat a lot of peaches. In fact, the peach is one of South Carolina’s official state foods. Celebrate this juicy summer fruit with a do-it-yourself peaches and cream soap that only takes about 10 minutes to make.

Seashell Frame

Framed photos are one of the best ways to personalize your space in a senior living community. They’re also a great way to remind yourself of summer fun with friends and loved ones once the chillier months hit. Preserve your summer memories with this simple seashell picture frame – glitter optional.
